1. Researching what to bring and deciding what to leave behind
2. Getting immunizations and prescription meds ahead of time
3. Taking Malaysian language lessons
4. Watching Malaysian documentaries and movies to get a sense of my host country's history and culture
5. Filling out forms and submitting documentation for my contract and visa
6. Accumulating a culturally appropriate summer wardrobe: professional and casual wear that covers the shoulders and knees
7. Cutting ties with my nonessential financial obligations in the U.S.: car and renters insurance company, health club membership, etc.
8. Using former fellows and current Malaysian expats as cultural informants regarding education system, technology use, and overall experiences
9. Attending the pre-departure orientation happening in Washington DC this week
10. Spending quality time with friends and family
